MAKE YOUR HOME MERRY & BRIGHT
My holiday décor goal this season is to create a welcoming space to celebrate in. Fill it with seasonal scents, a warm glow, and something to wrap up in as we soak it all up. This is what that looks like for us this year! Very minimal, a few festive staples and personal touches did the trick. There's more intention behind each decoration and a little more room for them to shine. I have the bad habit of overdoing it... going too far in purist of perfection and burying intent in clutter. So this was a great practice for me! I don't think you can ever have too much Christmas cheer, but if you're looking for a place to start, here are 5 simple ways that make your home merry and bright!
Growing up, each Friday after Thanksgiving I would hand out Santa hats, mix up some hot cocoa to fill our festive mugs and turn up the Christmas tunes! Relishing in the joys of holiday decorating with my family. Pulling out pictures of past Christmas's, hanging ornaments of cherished memories, and wrapping our home in lights and garland. It's quite possibly my favorite day of the entire year! Once Gus and I were married and in Maryland, we started to created traditions of our own. My family would still facetime me into their annual Christmas unveiling (they must have missed my unnecessary amount enthusiasm.)
Well this year, we accidentally left ALL OF OUR CHRISTMAS BINS IN KENTUCKY with our holiday decor and forgot to plan a trip to pick them up...whoops! It forced me to keep it simple this year and I feel our home is more welcoming and merry than ever! I scouted out the bare necessitates filling our home with cozy Christmas vibes. Success!
I did miss unpacking our Christmas treasures but this year will be a unique set of memories we are sure to appreciate. If you love to decorate too, I wanted to share the 5 festive touches we used to invite in the warm glow of the holiday season.
5 STEPS TO FESTIVE!
Oh Christmas tree, the centerpiece of holiday homes! We have been going all natural here in Chicago; I just can't get over the comforting smell of pines! Normally we have it wrapped in ribbon and filled with ornaments, but this year our tree has a hint of sparkle, the company of a few mini ornaments and two special ornaments I just couldn't resist. I can see all of the perfect pines and it compliments our living rooms so well. The best part is everyone's tree is so unique, a canvas for personal style, creativity, and traditions. Make it yours and soak up its lovely glow all season!
The wreath, a season staple at the tippy top of my décor list. Perched on doors, windows, and mantles they serve as a warm welcome to the Christmas spirit. A little fun fact.... the advent wreath started as a symbol of eternity for Christians, the continuation of life after death with Jesus. How fun!
Drape it across the mantle, wrap your light post, or douse your banisters with the charm of a little garland. We didn't get any this year, but I've been known to go a little crazy with it (I even put it on our chandelier one year...)
What's more inviting than a couch draped in cozy throw blankets? It makes me want to dive right in and snuggle up to watch A White Christmas with hot cocoa. So much of the season is spent around the Christmas tree and a soft blanket (or ladder of blankets in my case) is a warm way to wrap up and soak in the joy of the season. They're also great decorations to add some texture and layers to your space. Cable knits, faux furs and pom poms and popular winter favorites.
Peppermint, evergreen, sugar cookie, and gingerbread, oh the list of holiday scents! I fancy a candle year round, but in December I love to fill our home with their warm glow and soft smells of cookies and forests. They double as décor to cheer up your tabletops too! This candle brings the forests right inside with some bark and the most wonderful evergreen smell.
Stockings, charming little villages, peppermint sticks, or my personal favorite...antlers (fake ones of course.) This is where the season specifics really shine through! These simple little houses double as stocking hangers and make our mantle so homey (pun intended.) I have some antlers on our bar cart and stockings hung with care to top it off. You don't need much!
Pretty much all day every day in our home, Gus is a good sport. The soft sounds of acoustic Christmas tunes, the excitement of holiday pop, and classic Christmas jazz... I love it all. I can't do any of it all the time though, so I made a playlist that combines the best of all three to keep the festive juices flowing.
My Joyful Christmas Playlist is right here!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY DECORATING EVERYONE!
