6 HABITS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Healthy living is a choice, and I have to choose to take the steps that fuel a lifestyle of wellness. Diets and cleanses come and go, but habits stick around and keep my body from the enduring the rollercoaster of new trends and seasonal weaknesses; hello holidays!
Mornings are my favorite part of every day, a fresh start with great potential! Brightness, coffee, and excitement of an unpredictable day. Ironically, I have the hardest time waking up… leaving my pile of pillows is the worst! But, it’s the first step to kicking off a fulfilling day and one of my 6 healthy habits. See the full list below!
One of my very biggest weaknesses! I have quite the sweet tooth and feel that I truly need a little sugar throughout my day. Unfortunately… not the case! Sugar is necessary but our bodies only need about 25g a day, which we get naturally from fruits and vegetable (a banana has 14 grams.) When I overdo it… my body finds other ways and places to store my sweets making me sluggish and tired.
So sweet one moment and evil the next. If you look at the label of any of your grains or even flavored yogurt, you'd be surprised by their sugar content. Shoot for natural and unsweetened. Monitoring your sugar intake puts your mind and body on a new level of clarity, awareness, and happiness! I try to eat raw and unprocessed foods as often as possible and add a little natural sweetener like honey or agave if I need to.
I did a 7-day sugar cleanse with Mind Body Green and it felt AMAZING! Here is their article if you want to try it.
Water, water, water! Just about all of us have heard we should drink more water, and sure sounds nice, but a cup of coffee or glass of wine is much more fun and tasty. But then, by the end of the day, I’ve filled my body with things that literally dehydrates me! Ugh, I feel so worn down by the end of the day.
This habit benefits my mind, skin, eating habits… being hydrated is just a game changer! We need 11 cups of water a day on average, for every cup of coffee or glass of wine you tack one more one. I start my day with a glass of hot lemon water (great for your digestive system and skin) then keep a water bottle on hand all day. My skin is healthy, I’m energized, and just about everything in my body will be working more fluidly… so drink up!
I’m a morning person who hates waking up. It’s literally hard for me as silly as that sounds. So, of course, I put it off as long as I can, with sometimes up to 3 snoozes. Not anymore! I set my alarm and plug it in across the room (this also helps me disconnect before bed). Now when it goes off in the morning, I can’t bury it under my pillow before even opening my eyes. After I put my feet on the floor and walk to my vanity I so much more rational.
Going in and out of sleep for 30 minutes doesn’t do me any favors; it confuses my body, makes me more drowsy, and waists my precious morning. When I actually wake up, I enjoy a workout, read my Bible, and have a fresh and mindful start to my day. Opposed to being rushed, late and cutting out two of my healthy habits. If you are not a snoozer, well done, but if you are… jump on board, mindful mornings are within reach!
LOVE & SOCIALIZE
Chasing dreams and sharing them on social media is our generations day to day. My job, entertainment...honestly most of my time is spent with technology. It's easy to lose sight of the joy that a little social interaction brings until you leave the office setting and work from home, thank goodness for Leroy (our pup!) I have to make a point to set my phone aside, close my laptop, and get quality time in with friends and family. Relationships give me the fulfillment, security, and love that no job or instant gratification (social media) could accomplish. But, they take work, service, and attention. So, healthy habit #4 is to set it aside and socialize.
A given... we all know this one but everyone’s different so we shouldn't have the same expectations. My regimen and your's will be tailored to our schedules and fitness expectations. However, it should be a habit; part of your daily or weekly schedule. Exercise feels good, looks good, and lingers (yes!) A little movement benefits my body, brain, and completely changes my mood.
Mix up the intensity levels and make it regular, shooting for at least 3 times a week. You’ll find you’re sleeping better, you’re more energized, in a better mood, your heart will be more efficient effecting your body internally, and you’re weight and tone will, of course, improve on the outside!
Where to begin, this is the healthiest of all my habits. The one that affects all the others. My motivation, outlook, intentions, and attitude each day can all change and brighten as I incorporate Jesus. Faith is a consistent support system with unfailing love and guidance to lean on in every moment. I make it a habit to spend time with Jesus every day (usually the first thing I do in the morning, with my hot lemon water!) Time in prayer, God’s Word or my bible study sets my heart to service and clears my mind of all the clutter I fill it with.
These are just 6 of my favorite ways I live a healthy lifestyle. If you all have any habits that bring you joy and build you up, I’d LOVE to hear them! You can never have too many.
