Believe it or not, I’ve been drinking matcha since my early high school years. Before it was made into lattes, collagen blends and the whole craze kicked in! I was what they called a tea enthusiast… with shelves and baskets of tea tins, gadgets., and looses leaves teas of every kind.. Each tea type is picked and prepared differently with unique health benefits and flavors and matcha is the best of the best. The cream of the tea crop!
WHAT IS MATCHA
I wont get too scientific but basically, it’s the bomb! Matcha is made of green tea leafs—aka bursting with health benefits— that have been ground into a fine powder. You whisk that in hot water and boom, drink the whole tea leaf and soak up all of its magnificent antioxidants and EGCG. Great for protecting and preserving our bodies and skin! Tea typically carries a fraction of the caffeine of coffee. So if green tea doesn’t do it for you, matcha just might! You’re not infusing the leaf but ingesting it so everything is a bit more intense. Now imagine all that goodness surrounded by milk and steamed into a smooth latte…. D R E A M Y!
LOCATION: SAWADA COFFEE - KENZIE ST.
THE GOOD, THE BAD , THE BEST
If you’re a matcha fan, you know the difference. We don’t want sugar and fillers but the good stuff. It’s bright green and sugar free! You should be able to order it straight and unsweetened and a little something sweet if you’d like. I’ve sipped my way through The Windy City and found the good, the bad and the best. These guys make the good stuff, quality matcha with intentional preparation…I think the best in Chicago!
Two locations:River North (above) and West Loop.
They have dramatically different vibes, but the same great matcha. Kenzie is bright and eclectic and Green St. is like a cozy hideaway. My first matcha latte from Sawada was eye opening, literally blew me away! They bring in their tea from a farm in Japan for a killer high quality matcha. SO. DARN. GOOD.
Order Regular or Unsweetened.
Two Locations: Bucktown and Millennium Park
One of the best coffee and tea bars in Chicago with an amazing health conscious menu. Plus… a hand full of guilty pleasures from the best local bakeries! Fairgrounds does original matcha, iced, lattes, and elixers. They get creative and they do it well. The main location is Bucktown but have a smaller shop connected to the Chicago Athletic Association (AKA Cindy’s Rooftop) right across from Millennium Park.
Locations all over the city.
This darling diner stole my heart when they opened up a location down the street from us in Ravenswood. The menu is good and the matcha is great! I knew I liked them when I ordered a medium and they added more matcha instead of just milk! Great stop and you’re probably close to one with locations in most neighborhoods.
