April flew by in the blink of an eye. It’s been a month of new thoughts, experiences, plenty of processing and I’ve shared like 2% of it. So here we are with a recap, we’ve got some catching up to do! It seems semiannually, I ask myself the question, “ what am I really doing and what’s next?” I compare the life I’m living to the life I picture the truest version of myself enjoying and as always, realize I’m way off… A weakness of mine is totally letting the influence of others “success” sneak into my lifestyle. The constant distraction of social media (heck, both my jobs are in it!) surrounds us with the idea of endless opportunity and hustle—and it looks good, doesn’t it? Most of the time I don’t even realize I’m letting it lead me. But here I am, again noticing I’m living someone else's version of success. This time though, I’m making some serious changes, which is so hard to break after years so it’s taking some time and some practice to make a new normal.
First of all, I don’t see myself attached to my phone 24/7. Y’all, I’m on it WAY too much!I love the art, the content, the creation and connections I experience from my powerful handheld device but it can come at a cost . Especially for an undisciplined, scatterbrain like me. By nature, I’m an overthinker and my brain is a whirlwind of ideas, dreams, and to-dos. So one thing typically leads to 30 and hours without looking up. I love my scatterbrain and there’s no changing it but I CAN limit distractions and the things that play to it’s weakness. Ever since calling my blog a business, I’ve had an excuse to pick it up first thing in the morning and set it down just before bed. I’ve even said “I have to” because that's what successful people do. But as soon as creating and sharing becomes a “have to” instead of a “get to”, is it really serving anyone? In an attempt to be more present with family, friends, and faith and get back to baking and birthday cards I’m trying to incorporate a less is more approach in my own outlet, quality of quantity. You don’t need to see me every day for the sake of consistency or the infamous algorithm. But when I have something good goin’ on, you better believe I’ll be sharing the joy!
WHAT WENT DOWN IN APRIL
CLOSET CLEAN OUT +TIPS
I joined the masses this month and did spring cleaning through my closet. It usually takes a round or two and after the stress of decision making fades away, I feel fan-freakin’-tastic! Anyone else walk into their closet in the morning crammed with clothes and think “I have nothing to wear today.”? I do. All. The. Time! This frustraction is how it all started. It’s not that I need more, but that I have way too much to choose from. Usually, because I’m constantly trying to fill a gap with the wrong pieces due to a must try trend or sale. I realized I had a closet full of second-round picks, meaning I never choose them first. But for some reason never let them go… usually because of the imaginary scenario I dream up where I’ll want it, maybe, one day. The idea of needing something you’ve held onto for years and got rid of is tormenting!
I wasted to much time standing in front of clothes I never wear and totally went for it. The first tip for the other overthinkers out there, pull everything out of your closet! That's right all of it. Then pick out your most warn, must have, absolute and obvious favorite pieces and hang them back up. Instead of trying to pick out your least favorites, keep pulling your first round picks and putting them back where they belong. It’s pretty obvious when you get to the 2nd round, you hesitate. You pick up that sweater and have to think about the last time you wore it. Would you ever put it on instead of the ones handing in your closet? If the answer is eh, or probably not, let someone else enjoy and actually wear it. You already know the answer to the question, but if you keep it, you’ll keep asking yourself over and over again.
I’m working on a capsule wardrobe for spring and summer of strictly first round picks. Reserved for pieces I’ll want to wear all the freakin’ time! So far I’ve been pulling from Boyish Denim, &otherstories, Mango, Levi’s, Madewell (overalls baby!) and Schutz. Y’all will be the first to know when it’s done!
BEAUTY & WELLNESS
Earlier this month I made my way to Sephora to step up my beauty game. I’ve never been that into or great at makeup but sometimes it’s as simple as having the right products. I wanted a shimmery blush for glowing cheeks, dewy foundation, and non-smudging mascara (super picky about this one.) I bounced through their cruelty-free brands, which can be tricky because some of them opt to sell in China and are required to test on animals. So basically, they still do it but it’s not their practice so they don’t always count it. Googling my way through I learned that almost all of their cruelty-free brands are owned by parent companies that test on furry friends on the reg. So sneaky, and I had just given them $110 of my support. Oops! I’m no expert in the clean and cruelty-free area, but I try to do my best and thought this was worth sharing for us newbies! Hope to have have more clean and cruelty-free make-up reccomendations soon!
On the other hand there are three products I tried this month that I’m pumped to share with y’all. None of these are required to be in this post. They are only here becasue I want to share them with you!
Native| I’ve been using their deodorant for a year now, likethe same stick too… it lasts FOREVER! I like them because they leave out aluminum, parabens and sulfated, their easy to find and affordable. As of April, I tired their clean toothpaste, body wash, and soap too and give it two thumbs up! I know a lot of y'all already use them but I’ve got a code so you can save a little more. “allisonclairmurray20” will get you 20% off.
Skylar Scent Club| Just opened up my first scent in stories today but wow, so impressed. The packaging and intention down to the peanuts in the box are so amazing,. Basically, it’s a clean perfume subscrition of natural monthly scents. Planning a blog post for them to go into more detail but I’m a big fan! WESTOFFELICITY10 gets you 10% off their products!
Sonic Reresher| Also staring in today’s stories! Those hydrafacials I get… it’s a basic at home version of that! Basically a handheld mechanical microdermibrasion that breaks up and sucks off all the dead skin and buildup on your face. Used it this morning and making it part of my routine for sure!
