SETTING GOALS FOR 2018
There is something about the month of January that fills me with excitement and hope. I know it’s all in my head, the only real difference January has is its particular cold and I’m weaning myself off sugar. But as I take down our Christmas décor and crack open a shiny new planner, I feel the presence of a new beginning, a clean slate full of hope and opportunity. It’s the permission I crave to start fresh, to try something new, to stop making excuses and start making changes.
Over dinner last week, I had my friend Melody ask, “How have you grown over the year?”
I thought, hmmm, simple enough and listed off all the changes I made and mistakes I learned from. A lot went down last year! (You can catch up in my living joyfully posts here and here!) What I didn’t realize until she asked me point blank, was that I made moves but they were lateral, from one spot to another. My habits are the same and my comfort zone holds me captive.
What is normal for me, what’s expected of me (my least favorite) and what feels comfortable to me locks me into a repetitive routine. I say I’ll be disciplined but can’t seem to stop snoozing in the mornings. I’ll plan to work out but watch Ellen with a bowl of cereal instead. When you go home to see family, do you ever slip back into the habits that are expected of your younger less mature self? I know what I ‘m capable of, I can picture the woman I want to be but expectations and habits slither out and wrapped in its coils.
MY THEME OF 2018 IS …TO SERVE
This year I’m making moves, not just forward but upward. My goals are tangible, trackable, and VERTICAL! Straying from the plateau of comfort in 2018 and climbing toward the woman I was created to be. Which is a servant. Sounds harsh, but the truth is I’m here to serve. My family, my audience (you all!), total strangers… the Lord. I have my work cut out for me and ready to get cracking!
WHERE TO START
My first suggestion, if you’re REALLY serious about checking things off your list and making significant changes this year is to BREAK IT DOWN! Start general and dream big; where you want to be and what you want to do by the end of the year. Then dive into what you need to make it happen! Be realistic but push yourself (yea… that fine line) change isn’t easy but make sure you’re not setting yourself up for failure. That just gives you an easy out. Instead, be intentional and purposeful because you can do it! We can break through the cages of comfort together.
Grow closer to the Lord. Deepen my knowledge and understanding of His Words and walk in His Will. Be patient and compassionate. Live with a heart of service and humble myself. Q1 TASKS~ Get in His word 5 days a week (even while traveling.) Complete a new devotional. Find one new way to serve at Soul City Church. Love others above myself (write out a way to actually do it each morning with my intentions.) Spend time in prayer twice a day.
Be fearless and MAKE WAVES. Create boundaries to balance work and life. Be a present and intentional friend. Pour wisdom and inspiration into myself. Love well. Q1 TASKS ~ Fear is what holds me in my comfort zone. When I feel fear settle in, take it as a sign and go for it. In light of fear, persevere! Close my laptop at night when Gus is home. Plan ahead and work more efficiently during the day. Send out cards each month; birthday, anniversary, holidays. Be reliable and responsive. Read 3 books that will enlighten and inspire my heart and mind. My reading list for the year is here! Journal in the morning to process all my thoughts.
Serve my audience with inspiration and resources to live joyfully. Build a community. Find efficiency in my tasks and purpose in my work. Plan, plan, plan! Failing to plan is planning to fail…#truth but not this year! Buy less, sell less, serve more! Q1 TASKS~Focus on pouring into myself so I can serve others better. Plan with a purpose, one post a week with resources and inspiration for joyful living. Add a few fun posts in-between! Host an event per quarter to build community. Make shortcuts for work efficiency (email and editing.)
It’s never too late to start planning for a purpose and setting new goals. We don’t need a first of the year or the first of the month. Just a little willpower and intention. Can’t wait to see what you all do with 2018!
P.S. how AMAZING is this kitchen?! (It’s not mine… I wish!) It belongs to Anna Ahern, my friend behind the lens and I just love what she created with this space!
